A Buyer’s Agent’s Story
When I was in my mid 20s (7 years ago) as a young single woman, I used to look around and see friends and family members in ‘happy relationships’ with their dogs and ‘fixer upper’ houses and think, “I can’t wait till I find a partner and do the same!” I genuinely thought, unless your name was Taylor Swift or had a fancy corporate leadership job, that there was no way a single income woman could afford a house on her own. I was like Cinderella, storing money away for when her prince charming would come (this was only in 2017 – how ridiculous!) It turns out that I just needed to be my own hero!
The realisation came to me when a male coworker who was on the exact same pay scale as me, bought his own home by himself! It was at that moment, I realised gender had nothing to do with it – it was grit, determination and self-belief. So I took the leap, nervously spoke to a mortgage broker and he simple said, “yep, we can help you with that.”
Hard Hitting Truth
This brings me to my main point. Just because you are not in a relationship, just because you are not married, it doesn’t mean your life is on hold. I set a goal, stuck a picture of my dream house (a fixer upper!) and a savings tracker on the fridge that I coloured in and worked hard. I even got a holiday job to speed up the savings process. How can you temporarily increase your income or reduce your spending?
